Covering a distance of 3.2km, the JP Magufuli Bridge in Tanzania is a significant infrastructure project that spans Lake Victoria, connecting the towns of Kigongo and Busisi, and it is going to be the 6th longest bridge on a water body in Africa. It was named after the late president of Tanzania , John Pombe Magufuli and the construction project began in December 2019.
The bridge is located in north-western Tanzania, specifically in the Mwanza region, linking Sengerema and Misungwi districts. The bridge is a low-pylon cable-stayed bridge with a 520-meter main span and dual cable planes. This project was valued at around $260-300 million, fully funded by the Tanzanian government, constructed by the China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC) and China Civil Engineering Construction Group (CCECG).
The bridge reduces travel time between the shores from 2-3 hours by ferry to under 5 minutes by road, boosting trade, tourism, and regional integration. It’s expected to enhance trade links between Tanzania and neighboring countries, including Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The bridge was officially opened to traffic on June 19, 2025, marking a historic moment for Tanzanian infrastructure.
Tourism is expected to significantly be boosted in the Lake Victoria region by enhancing accessibility to key attractions, making it easier for tourists to explore the area. With improved connectivity, visitor statistics are expected to rise, driven by enhanced safety and more comprehensive regional travel packages.
The bridge unlocks previously challenging-to-reach destinations, such as Rubondo Island National Park known for chimpanzee trekking and wildlife safaris, Saanane Island National Park, a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, Ukerewe Island which is rich in cultural heritage and natural beauty and the Bismarck Rock, a popular spot for photography and scenic views. Travelers and tour operators can expect significant reductions in travel time and fuel expenses, allowing for more resources to be allocated to enhanced experiences and value-added services. These islands have not been receiving tourists because of the hassle of getting there but with the completion of the bridge, visitors will have a chance to discover the hidden gems in these beautiful places. This in the long run will also lead to infrastructure development in these islands and fishing villages to accommodate visitors.
