As Uganda approaches the general elections in January 2026, the most frequently asked question by all visitors still remains; “Is it safe to travel to Uganda during the forthcoming general elections?” That is a valid question given the essence of personal safety for any safari adventure.
International bodies like the Centre for Strategic International Studies (CSIS) portray Uganda’s general elections as a period of unrest, violence and distress. However, local authorities guarantee peace and safety for all visitors and locals alike. Speaking at the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE) on 22nd May 2025 at Speke Resort Munyonyo , the Head of State House Investor’s Protection Unit Edith Nakalema assured investors and visitors that the elections will not disrupt the already thriving tourism sector.
“Uganda prioritizes the protection of investors, including tourists, who play a critical role in supporting our economy. I assure you the country is peaceful, and we are working to maintain that status, even during the forthcoming general elections. Our tourism police is dedicated and specialized, and law enforcement is fully committed to ensuring the safety of visitors, especially in national parks and safari zones,” Nakalema said. She also reassured international visitors that tour operators are prepared to adjust itineraries during the election period to avoid potential disruptions, with minimal impact on the travel experience.
The Uganda Human Rights Commission, the Electoral Commission and the Uganda Police Force also recently met on 24th September to discuss the security and safety of Ugandans and visitors ahead of the 2026 General elections. The three bodies agreed to create an environment where every Ugandan votes freely and safely.
The political environment still remains tense with opposition parties continuing to express grievances over electoral processes, human rights abuses, and the question of presidential tenure; with president Museveni seen by some as attempting to extend his rule indefinitely. Reports from both domestic and international organizations suggest that the political opposition could face significant restrictions in the immediate run-up to the elections, with police deploying a heavy handed approach particularly during politically charged events like campaigns and rallies that tend to be chaotic sometimes.
That said, the general elections period falling during the peak tourist season is a call for tourists to take caution in order to have a safe and stress free adventure. It is also an assurance of their safety and security during their visit. Like any other nation, presidential elections are a big deal and a lot happens during this period, and visitors are encouraged to be aware of their surroundings and take caution. Before we dive into the safety precautions, let us take a glimpse into what to expect when visiting Uganda during this period.
Traffic delays
Of all the cities in Uganda, Kampala is always the most affected during presidential elections. Being the capital and metropolitan city of Uganda, there are always a lot of political activities going on for instance presidential nominations, campaigns, rallies, and on some occasions, demonstrations from the opposition. Also recently residents of Kampala have experienced traffic delays; sometimes lasting hours because roads are occasionally closed off for the presidential convoys and most cases, it is unexpected.
Communication interruptions
On the eve of the 2021 presidential elections, Uganda was plunged into a 100hour internet blackout to prevent the spread of political propaganda and also curb potential violence and unrest. It is possible that the same will happen next year. In a meeting held on 30th September 2025 in Gulu City organised by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the state minister for ICT and National Guidance Mr Kabyanga Godfrey Baluku said that the government may interrupt the internet connectivity during the 2026 elections if intelligence points to attempts to use it to incite violence; so this should not take you by surprise.
Safety in Safari destinations
Tourism is a leading revenue and growth sector for Uganda, surpassing coffee as a top revenue generator and significantly contributing to the nation’s GDP so government bodies and private tour operators have put in place measures to ensure the safety of tourists. Besides, all safari destinations in Uganda are far away from the political hotspots so be assured of safety.
Border crossings
Uganda has only one international airport; Entebbe International Airport EBB and its operations have never been affected by the general elections. Local and international flight schedules hardly change. Likewise, land border crossings still remain operational with just more restrictions, so visitors interested in cross-border trips across East Africa will not be affected.
Effect on the Uganda shilling
A lot of money is usually put into circulation during the presidential elections leading to depreciation of the shilling and appreciation of the dollar. This automatically leads to increase in the cost of goods and services making Uganda a more expensive tourist destination compared to her neighbours.
Safety guidelines for tourists: Your guide to peace of mind in 2026
As earlier discussed, the tourism sector is very important to the economic development of Uganda and the government together with other authorities will not put it in jeopardy because of elections. Much as the security and safety of the tourists has been guaranteed, it is crucial to take precaution if you’re visiting the country during this period. Here are some guidelines for a safe and memorable safari experience.
Travel through a trusted travel agency
This is definitely one of the most important things to consider if you intend to visit Uganda during elections. Travel agencies work hand in hand with government and tourism bodies to ensure that tourists are safe. Travel agencies have been briefed about the situation and have been equipped with knowledge and skills to make sure that their services are not interrupted.
Join travel groups
Lately, many travellers prefer to travel alone but this may not be safe in January 2026. However, if you do not have travel buddies, there are platforms on the internet that arrange for you to link up with fellow solo travellers and have a more engaging safari experience. Since we anticipate a spike in the cost of tourist products and services, joining a travel group could help to cut on the costs and also guarantees you extra security.

Avoid Kampala
Plan your itinerary to include activities outside of Kampala because the city tends to get chaotic during this period; not forgetting the unexpected road blocks and traffic jam. It is 100% possible to visit Uganda and not set foot in Kampala because the Express route from the Airport connects directly to the highways that lead to the major tourist destinations which are all outside Kampala. If you’re planning a cross border trip, we advise a one way trip by flying back home through your last destination.
Avoid self drive
One of the best ways to explore the tranquil beauty of Uganda is by renting a vehicle for self drive because it gives you the freedom and flexibility to travel at your own pace. However, we advise that you hire a vehicle with a driver because they are more informed about the safest routes and it also guarantees you extra security.
Stay informed
It is important to keep up with the local updates by reading from the embassy websites and asking as many questions as you can from the tour operators. Also follow news updates from local news agencies before planning your itinerary.
Stay away from rallies
Political rallies in Uganda especially those of the opposition often times turn out to be chaotic. When things get out of hand, police may use teargas and sometimes live ammunition to disperse off the crowds. Should you happen to encounter a political rally, change your route immediately and stay indoors until the situation calms down. Otherwise, never be tempted to join these rallies for your own safety.
Final thoughts
Uganda still remains one of the leading safari destinations East Africa and tourism will not be affected by elections so it is safe to travel during the election period.
While the allure of Uganda’s breath-taking scenery and unique wildlife is undeniable, the ability to travel safely during politically volatile periods depends heavily on the traveller’s awareness and preparedness. Ultimately, balancing adventure and safety is the key to enjoying all that Uganda has to offer, even in the face of potential challenges posed by the political climate.
